The Vietnam War was fought by the body count system; in contrast to taking ground. The only way to obtain "that body count" was to "find em, then destroy em."
There were two other options available: Invade North Vietnam or use nuclear weapons. Then the body count method wouldn't be needed, those two options would bring back the traditional "taking ground" way of fighting.
