The Rastafarian Movement is a new religion that has grasped Jamaica in the late 20th century. Rastafari or "Rasta" is a belief that the original Israelites were black. They believe that white society imposed their culture on the black Israelites after the capture in Babylon. Rastafaris believe that a former Ethiopian emperor (Haille Selassie) is the reincarnation of God or "Jah" as they call him. They believe that God has, in fact, reincarnated several times over the span of history. Jesus is believed to be a reincarnation, but Haille Selassie is just the latest. They believe that the former emperor is the Messiah, who is foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament.

Rastafari is also a Zionist movement. They believe that Ethiopia is the New Jerusalem. They believe that black people should repatriate Ethiopia because it is believed to be the seat of God (Jah) on the physical earth. They also believe that, since the original Israelites were black, that Jesus is also black. White society had painted Jesus up to be white, to have dominion over black people. They do believe that salvation is available to all peoples regardless of ethnicity.

What kind of ring would represent Jamaican culture?

Although Jamaican culture is rich in symbolism, there are a few that stand out as perfect representations of Jamaican culture and would fit beautiful in a ring design. The best, perhaps, is the royal lion symbol that has become synonymous with Jamaica, the lion who roars against injustice. Another symbol that is popular amongst the Jamaican people when it comes to jewelry is a profile relief of Hailie Salassie, the late King of Ethopia and symbol of the Rastafarian movement. Although if you prefer a less specific representation of the Jamaican culture, you could always chose the ubiquitous "peace sign" ring, which is an integral part of Jamaican culture.
