In 1933 the Jewish population of Germany (as defined by the Nazis) was about 850,000 out of total population of about 62 million in Germany. By 1935 the number of Jews had fallen slightly as a result of emigration.
In May 1945 there were an estimated 15,000 German Jews in Germany. In 1933, when the Nazis came to power, there were about 500,000 (in the sense of members of Jewish congregations).
In addition, there were Jews of other nationalities in Germany in 1945, as in the last few months of the war many prisoners were moved westwards from Auschwitz and some other camps. The SS didn't want the Soviet Army to find large numbers of victims alive.
It depends on the definition. There are about 110,000 members of Jewish congregations in Germany. However, if one adds ethnic Jews, the number is over 200,000.
Both these figures are much higher than those for the period 1950-1990, when there were only about 30,000 Jews in the two German states (West and East). In 1990, when Germany was reunified, the German parliament (Bundestag) passed a law making it easy for Jews to settle in Germany with very few questions asked. Since then, a fair number of Jews from the former Soviet Union have settled in Germany.
Possibly a couple of thousand Berlin Jews were still in Berlin on VE Day ...
The population decreased from 140,000 to 30,000 by 1945
In the 1920s Berlin had a Jewish population (in the sense of religious Jews) of about 140,000 which was about a quarter of Germany's Jews. Obviously, if you include people of Jewish origin you get a higher figure. The German-speaking city with the largest Jewish population was, however, Vienna (the capital of Austria).
The population of West Berlin at the time of the blockade and airlift (1948-49) was about 2 million.
The Russians Captured Berlin On April 30, 1945.
Nothing. Hitler died in 1945; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961.
