USN Admiral Oldendorf had SIX US battleships engage two IJN battlewagons under Admiral Nishimura on 25 October 1944 at Surigao Strait. Battleship USS South Dakota was shot to pieces by IJN Kirishima's 14 inch guns at Guadalcanal in '42. Battleship USS Washington snuck up on the Kirishima (while she was blasting the SODAK) and blasted it to a wreck during the same battle.

Why was the battle of Jutland indecisive?

Because the British Navy Battleships were UNABLE to regain contact with the German Fleet Battleships to engage them with their guns (they turned at least twice to avoid battle). The Germans sped back into friendly port(s). The Battleships (Dreadnaughts) had missed their opportunity for decisive battle; the main fight had been between "Battlecruisers" (Less Armored Warships). The only "Decisive" battleship fleet action ever fought was at Tsushima in May 1905. In that fight, the Russian Battleship Fleet did the complete opposite of what the German Battleship Fleet did at Jutland in 1916...the Russians charged directly into the Japanese Battleship Line; the Japanese Battleships crossed the Russian's "T".

How did women participate in the military during world war 2?

In WWII, women were prohibited by law from serving in combat units, but that didn't prevent them from actually being in combat. The Womens' Army Corps (WAC) enlisted women to serve in administrative roles; bookkeeping, typing, generating reports, and as Stateside radio operators. Nurses were sometimes the most visible women for combat soldiers; upon being evacuated to hospitals in areas removed from the fighting, they did heroic work in treating the injured. Women weren't supposed to go into combat, but sometimes combat came to THEM; a few nurses were captured by the Japanese during the early months of the war, and suffered unspeakable atrocities. And some nurses were killed by Japanese air raids. Women served as "ferry pilots", flying bombers and fighters from the US, to Labrador, to Greenland, to Iceland, and then to England. This freed up men to fly those fighters and bombers into combat in France and Germany. Nowadays, while women are generally not assigned to combat infantry roles, they can and do fly fighters, bombers, and support aircraft. In fact, the first woman fighter pilot to engage in combat (flying A-10 "Warthog" tank killers) over Iraq went on to command a fighter squadron, and then retired from the Air Force. In the November 2014 elections, LT. COL Martha McSally was elected to the US House of Representatives from Arizona.

What is the historical significance of the Battle of Midway?

Historically, naval warfare's traditional sea battles have been fought, won, and lost by traditional "men 'o war"...that is to say...the "Battleship." There were WOODEN battleship's powered by cloth sails which were driven by the wind at Trafalgar in 1805. There were steel battleship's powered by coal fuelled engines at Tsushima in 1905. There cruiser fleet actions fought at the Java Sea in 1942...these were all SURFACE actions with warships fighting one another. 1. Midway was history's first decisive sea battle fought with aircraft carriers fighting aircraft carriers. (Coral Sea was history's FIRST carrier to carrier sea battle; but it was NOT a decisive sea battle). 2. Midway was a decisive sea battle. It altered the course of the war by allowing the USN to have the fighting edge from every sea battle onward. Without crack pilots/and aircrewmen (crack=a 20th century military term meaning experienced & excellent fighting men/for example: a "Crack Regiment", or "Crack Tank Crew", etc.) to engage US airmen, less trained IJN airmen were no match in future aerial combat engagements. As would be evident during the "Mariannas Turkey Shoot" in 1944.
