More troops should have been dropped behind the beachfront to take out the artillary and to stop the assault on the landing craft. Heavier bombing of the bunkers before the landing could have been effective as well. In general, it's easy to evaluate what SHOULD have been done after we see the results. The Allied forces did the best they could under the circumstances, given the current state of their technology.
