GI's in Vietnam were as young as 16; age 19 could have been possible for a 2nd Lieutenant; age 20 to 21 was probably more common, if to be the youngest. College degrees were NOT required for US Army officers during the Vietnam War. They were required for the USN, USMC, and USAF. USA officers were drafted, then tested for their GT scores, 110 or above qualified them for Army OCS (Officer Candidate School; graduates from these schools in WW2 were nick-named "90 Day Wonders").

∙ 12y agoI met the youngest soldier to serve in Vietnam, my ex-roommate's brother. He was 16 years old, had permission from his parents to join the Marines. He had been there one month in April 1975, serving at the U.S. Embassy when the evacuation began. His name is Jerry Cassidy. He is one year older than me. He was born in 1958. There may have been soldiers younger than 16 who served in Vietnam but he is the youngest soldier to have served in Vietnam. In other words, no soldiers born in 1959 and after served in Vietnam. He is the youngest person alive today to have served in Vietnam.I can assure you he was not the youngest,iw as a juniour recruit on hmas sydney when we were i Vietnam at the age of 16 in 1972 ,i was born in 1956
Note: To serve in the US Military, you must be at least 17 years of age. Anyone that served at a younger age lied to the recruiters about their age.

∙ 14y agoIn Viet Nam a soldier reached the rank of E-5 at the young age of 18 yrs. old. The soldier had only one year in service. The soldiers name was Specialist Robert Ramos who was assigned to the 101st Airborne div. in 1970.
