King Uther was crazy in love with the Duke of Cornwall's wife, Igraine. He wanted her as a lover but she refused him, loyal to her husband. King Uther became depressed. Merlin promised Uther he could spend the night with her, disguised as Gorlois (the Duke). Merlin's only condition was to take their child once he was born. Uther, desperate for love with Igraine, agreed. The Duke was killed in Terabyll. And Uther & Igraine ended up together. They had their son, and gave him up to Merlin, as promised.

It has been said that another child was made by Uther and Igraine, a legitimate heir to the throne and was named Mordred. Over time this has changed as the early works made Arthur a usurper to the throne of Britain and surprisingly, also made Arthur a warmongering tyrant. In the later versions, the clubbed footed Mordred was conceived by Arthur and his sister Morgause (Morgan le Fey). But in all cases the story ends the same with a great battle in which Arthur kills Mordred and is also mortally wounded. The fable ends with Arthur now resting in the forever sleep to be woken when Britain need's its king again. Excalibur will once again be placed back into Arthur's hand.

Through Merlin's magic, Uther and several men are transformed into the likeness of Gorlois and several of the duke's men. Disguised, they were able to enter the fortress at Tintagel. Uther went straight to Igraine. She was surprised to see her husband there at that hour but . . . Arthur was conceived that night. Merlin knew that Arthur would be special, so he asks for the child, promising that he would take the baby to a trusted man to raise in secret. The baby is born and Merlin takes him to Sir Ector. and raised him when they had the Sir Ector raises the boy, not knowing who Arthur's parents really are. Years late, Uther dies seemingly without an heir. Through a miracle (or Merlin's magic) the sword in the stone appears in a courtyard. A great tournament is held to see who can draw the sword and therefore become King. The rest is history, Arthur pulls the sword from the stone. At first he's contested but eventually the majority of the people concede and proclaim Arthur as their King. then every one knew he was the rightful king of Britain

Geoffrey does not say, and later accounts disagree, as to whether Gorlois died before or after Arthur was begotten (something that might be important in determining whether or not a child could be made legitimate by a later marriage to its true father). Uther Pendragon later marries Igraine. According to Geoffrey, Igraine also bore a daughter Anna to Uther Pendragon, this Anna later becoming the mother of Gawain and Mordred. Yet Geoffrey also refers to King Hoel of Brittany as Arthur's nephew and presents a prophecy that to Uther's daughter will be born a line of seven kings, something true if Howel is Anna's son, but not true if only Gawain or Mordred are Anna's sons. There is confusion here, especially as Welsh genealogies name an Anna as Howel's mother but one not connected to Uther Pendragon.
