Because the Japanese were being cut off natural resources from the United States for their involvement in China. United States cut off financial aid to Japan when they did not back out of China, but continued to grab at resources that they were not entitled. Japan decided to go all out and attack Pearl Harbor, where they had been allowed to fish and collect information about the area of the Harbor and send back information to the Imperial Navy, on the US fleet docked in the harbour. The Japanese people saw American's as a people who would not be able to get it together if they were attacked. Historically, they were proven wrong!

The geography of Pearl Harbor provided natural protection for the attackers, as it was a shallow harbor, making it difficult for large ships to navigate. Additionally, the mountains surrounding the harbor provided cover for the attacking aircraft, allowing them to approach undetected. These geographical factors contributed to the success of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Japanese wanted to conrol the entire pacific area and they knew that their biggist obstacle in achieving this was the US navy. As a large part of that navy was all together in one place, they took their opportunity.

The patch with stars and arrows that represents the attack on Pearl Harbor is called the "Pearl Harbor Commemorative patch." It features a blue emblem with two white stars and two red arrows pointing towards a central red dot, symbolizing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The patch serves as a memorial to honor the lives lost during the attack.
Honolulu International is the closest airport to Pearl Harbor. (Pearl Harbor is what is sounds like- a harbor for ships. ) The Military airfields at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack were Ford Island Naval Air Station (adjacent to Battleship Row), and Hickam Field (next to Honolulu and the entrance to Pearl Harbor). Wheeler Field, a major US Army Air Force installation at the center of the island of Oahu, was also severely attacked, as was Bellows Field (on the South East edge of Oahu), Kaneohe Naval Air Station (Eastern Oahu coast) and Ewa Marine Corps Air Station (on the western edge of Pearl Harbor bay). Kaneohe is now a state park, Bellows a military recreation area, and Ewa was abandoned in the 1950s. Wheeler is a National Historic Landmark as well as a training base for the Army now. Ford Island NAS is now a Naval Auxiliary Landing Field, and, as such, operates almost exclusively general aviation flights. Hickam Field is still a major US Air Force Base, home of the US Pacific Air Forces command. Honolulu International Airport is located immediately adjacent to the city of Honolulu, and is on the southern ocean coast, right next to the entrance to Pearl Harbor. The new general-aviation airport of Kaneohe is located on the South West corner of Oahu, a couple of miles from the Pearl Harbor entrance.
