The battle of Shiloh was basically the bloodiest battle to date. However to expand on this topic, this is an overview of what happened: Ulysses S. Grant was ready to strike into the heartland of the SHouth and ConfederateAlbert Sidney Johnston ordered his troops to attack Grand before Buell, the other Union commander, could arrive. The surprise attack from Johnston pushed back the Union troops back from the high ground they occupied towards the Tenneesse River. The Union troops struggled and then surrendered. While the Union forces were pinned against Tennessee River the Confederates were exhausted and it was still not quite a victory for them. General Johnston lost his life and this effected the Confederates morale. Then reinforcement (Buell's Troops) finally arrived during the night as did forces under General William H. Wallace, helping assist Grant fight the Confederates. At the break of dawn, Grant attacked pushing the Confederate forces back until they retreated in the afternoon. The battle however exhausted both sides. This was another wake up call that the war was not over and still costly as ever.
