Mexico-Tenochtitlan, present-day Mexico City.
Tenochtitlan had a population of 200,000 - 250,000 people, four times the population of London at the time (1521). It was also built atop some islands on Lake Texcoco, interconnected by canals and passageways - much like the city of Venice, Italy.
Aztec
Mexico City has been the capital of Mexico since March 13, 1325 when it was first founded by the Aztecs as their capital city. When Spanish conquistadors destroyed the Aztecs and conquered Mexico in 1521, they choose to keep the same city as their capital. Finally, when Mexico attained its independence from Spain in 1821, they also choose to keep Mexico City as the capital of the new country, which has been until this day.
Mexico City. On ancient times (prior to 1521) it was the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan.
It was first the capital of the ancient Aztec Empire, and after the colonization of Mexico by the Spaniards they made it capital of the new territory. They encouraged immigration heavily and most Spanish settlers stayed in the city while others moved around. This happened continuously for over 300 years, and naturally by the time Spanish immigration stopped the place was fully-grown. In modern times, its status as capital of Mexico and considerable wealth makes it a very attractive city.
