What was the cause of the union nearly succeeded in splitting the confederacy in two?

I do think you are referring to the first offensive against Vicksburg, led by Admiral Farragut in May 1862, after the seize of New Orleans. Statement of fact. Once New Orleans was conquered the way up along the Mississippi was widely open and Farragut perfectly considered the importance of Vicksburg, which was the unique potential obstacle standing between his fleet and Memphis. Had he seized this stronghold he would have reached Memphis, thus succeeding in splitting the Confederacy into two parts. He therefore put in motion a naval task force composed by the steam corvette Brooklyn and 3 steam gunboats, which took Baton Rouge on May 9 and Natchez on May 12, without any opposition. Farragut then joined that task force with the steam corvette Hartford, several other units and two steamer carrying 1,500 troopers. After fifteen days the fleet was in sight of Vicksburg, but found the town and its neighbours ,had been so strong fortified and provided with heavy artillery, that Farragut decided to give up the endeavour, retreating on May 26 towards New Orleans.
