The Roosevelt Corollary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine that was articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his State of the Union Address in 1904. The corollary states that the United States will intervene in conflicts between European Nations and Latin American countries to enforce legitimate claims of the European powers, rather than having the Europeans press their claims directly. What were the similarities and differences between Roosevelt's big stick diplomacy and Wilson's missionary diplomacy?

Both Rooseveltâ??s Big Stick Policy and Wilsonâ??s Missionary Diplomacy were centered around Latin Americaâ??s relationship with the United States and were addendums to the Monroe Doctrine. However, Rooseveltâ??s policy was based on the idea of peaceful negotiations while threatening military action. While it was used in both domestic miner strikers and in dealing with Asia, Roosevelt used it primarily in Latin America especially in the case of the Panama Canal. He used it in conjunction with the Roosevelt Corollary. Meanwhile, Wilsonâ??s Missionary Diplomacy stated that the Wilson administration would recognize no Latin American governments that were hostile to American interests.

How did the Roosevelt Corollary change the way the US conducted foreign policy?

Well, the Roosevelt Corollary stated that the United States would pay off the debts of Latin American countries in order to keep Europe out. Roosevelt feared that European powers would loan money to these countries and thus become involved in the western hemisphere (a violation of the Monroe Doctrine). Because of this, this was an extension of the Monroe Doctrine, and became a part of the US foreign policy. The Roosevelt corollary is important because it added to the Monroe Doctrine in matters of foreign military actions.

What were the negative effects of Roosevelt's Corollary?

The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine proclaimed that the United States would "protect" the nations of Central and South America from European interference by exercising an international police force in the area. The actions of the United States under the corollary pleased US and European investors because it protected their monetary interests in the area, but the corollary also created ill will between the US and the nations of Latin America who felt that they were being bullied by the great American colossus of the North. The seizure of the Panama Canal zone was an example of action that greatly offended Latin America. MrV

Roosevelt's Corollary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine that declared the United States could intervene, or use military force to keep peace, in Latin American countries when necessary. Dollar Diplomacy focused on business. Taft believed the United States should invest in other countries to maintain and increase its power. Wall street bankers backed loans made by US business to foreign countries. Basically, Roosevelt's "big stick" was military and Taft's "big stick" was business.
