"Doodlebug" was one nickname for the German V-1 bomb, more often called a "Buzz Bomb". There were primitive cruise missiles that flew until they ran out of fuel, then crashed and exploded on whatever was below. Precise aiming was impossible, but they could hit a target as large as London.
