The twofold purpose of the Sabbath that comes to mind isn't limited to the "Old Testament," but lives on to this day and on into the future for anyone willing to see and obey it.

As stated in God's Ten Commandments, the Sabbath day is, first of all, a CONTINUOUS WEEKLY REMEMBRANCE OF CREATION for all generations of mankind to acknowledge their Creator's Power, Wisdom and Understanding.

That's how God wrote it down... to REMEMBER creation; as opposed to what the world has done by FORGETTING or NEGLECTING or REFUSING to remember it; teaching "evolution" instead -- "creation WITHOUT a Creator."

The second purpose of the Sabbath is TO MARK GOD'S PEOPLE. The observance of the Sabbath is an IDENTIFIER, for the world to KNOW WHO GOD'S PEOPLE TRULY ARE! And to let them know who their God is. It is a PUBLIC SIGN or VISIBLE DISPLAY that ID's God's people to God's people, themselves... and the world:

"...Verily MY SABBATHS [the weekly and the annual ones] YE SHALL KEEP: for IT IS A SIGN BETWEEN ME AND YOU throughout your generations; that YE MAY KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD that doth sanctify you [who sets you apart from all other nations for My Holy use - that's what sanctify means]." (Ex.31:13 KJV)

"Wherefore the children of Israel shall KEEP THE SABBATH, to observe the Sabbath THROUGHOUT THEIR GENERATIONS [the generations of man didn't stop with the Old Testament], FOR A PERPETUAL COVENANT[agreement]." (verse 16)

The world, of course, [or a small part of it, at least] reads this passage and reasons: "Oh... well, I'm not one of the children of Israel. I'm a Christian; so this doesn't pertain to me."

But, Oh how wrong these people are. Abraham's TRUE children aren't his by his DNA or bloodline but by Faith in CHRIST'S SHED BLOOD!

"Know ye therefore that THEY WHICH ARE OF FAITH, the same ARE THE CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM [and they are therefore - Israelites]." (Gal.3:7)

"For ye are ALL THE CHILDREN OF GOD BY FAITH in Christ Jesus... There is neither Jew nor Greek [Gentile], there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for YE ARE ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS. And IF YE BE CHRIST's, then ARE YE ABRAHAM's SEED, and HEIRS according to the Promise." (verses 26-29)

And if you are Christ's... therefore YOU ARE AN ISRAELITE... adopted into Abraham's "Faithful Family"... and therefore MARKED BY THE LORD's SIGN and His PERPETUAL SABBATH COVENANT [that it BE KEPT FOREVER]!

The world little notes [or cares] that it was and is the Almighty Creator, WORD of God in the Old Testament who BECAME Jesus Christ in the New [see John 1:1-3]. And that it was JESUS CHRIST, the WORD, who MADE THE SABBATH ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF CREATION... and Who wrote the Ten Commandments on the stone tablets with His finger!

And the vast majority of modern professing Christians who reject the Old Testament [and much of what The Bible says in general] either don't know... or don't believe Jesus, Himself, when He tells them that HE IS LORD WHO MADE THE SABBATH DAY! And that He IS THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR LORD GOD [who made all that is - see John 1:3] whom the Sabbath REMEMBERS!

"...'The Sabbath day was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: therefore THE SON OF MAN IS LORD also OF THE SABBATH." (Mark 2:27-28)

The purpose of the Sabbath is to keep mankind in constant weekly REMEMBRANCE of CREATION every seventh day... and to serve as GOD'S MARK upon God's people, to IDENTIFY them as God's people, and, conversely, it IDENTIFIES God as their God.

What is sabbath day?

When God first made the world, it took six days then rested on the seventh day. As part of the rules of Judaism, HaShem commanded that we honour the 7th day with a day of rest, this is called Shabbat. Shabbat starts sundown Friday and ends sundown Saturday. During Shabbat, Jews prayer and refrain from the 39 forms of work specified in the Torah.

Who does the Pentateuch in the Old Testament point to in the New Testament?

The Pentateuch, or the first five books in the Old Testament serve the same purpose as do all the books in the Bible. They point to Jesus Christ through types, events which are reflected in Jesus's life and purpose, and through prophesy.

What does the Old Testament and the New Testament have in common?

The Old Testament speaks of the coming of Jesus, and sets the scene. The New Testament tells of the life and death of Jesus and how we should follow his example. A lot of Jesus's teachings are at odds with the Jewish way of life. He is always challenging the rabbis in the synagogues, with regards to working on the sabbath, or taking the best seats for oneself, etc.

Is Isaiah in the old testament or new testament?

The Old Testament.

Does Jesus want you to keep all ten commandements?

Yes, all except one, regarding the sabbath. Every single Old Testament commandment bar this one is repeated either directly, or in principle in the New Testament. The difference is that Christian believers have been given the Spirit of Christ who provides power to do all and even more than what would be required under the Law. The sabbath, being a symbol of the Old Testament worship and religious observances which have passed away, is no longer applicable to Christians.

How does missionary activity of the church today relate to the purpose of God revealed in the Old Testament?

A:It would seem that missionary activity is contrary to the purpose of God in the Old Testament, although of course it is consistent wth what we read in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, God was solely concerned with his Chosen People, the Israelites. In the Book of Joshua God this was made clear when he even commanded that Joshua put to death every man, woman and child of the conquered cities.
