The New York Herald was a rival of the NY Tribune and ultimately became a newspaper with the largest national readership during the US Civil War. Its publisher was the anti-Radical James Gordon Bennett. It was an outspoken enemy of the Radical Republicans and did not care for President Lincoln either. It had a strong and very clear view on "racism". While wanting the US Civil War rebellion to end, it also said that the ultimate goal of Federal policy was to preserve white supremacy in a restored Union.

During the US Civil War, the New York Times editorial policy generally favored the preservation of the Union and the abolition of slavery. The newspaper also supported President Abraham Lincoln's administration, although at times it was critical of specific policies. Overall, the New York Times presented a pro-Union, anti-secession stance in its editorials during the Civil War.

The New York Times was edited by Henry Raymond, who had founded the paper in 1851. Like President Lincoln, he was a moderate Republican. He was once a Whig and then helped to form the Republican Party.
