Christopher Columbus.
Spain explored the entire world but concentrated mainly on Central and South America.
Spain was the jump starter to European exploration when it funded Columbus's voyage across the Atlantic. Columbus claimed the land for Spain. Portugal, who was Spain's ally, had an agreement with Spain that they'd stay east of a certain line of longitude so Spain could have the Americas and they'd settle for Africa. However, they did not anticipate how close the size and location of the Americas, and this line of longitude runs through South America. This explains why the Portuguese occupied about half of South America, their colony of Brazil.
Columbus first explored the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas on Sunday morning, October 12, 1492. He landed on a beach, and this marked the beginning of European exploration and colonization in the Americas.

Lief Erickson was indeed the first known European to land on America. Christopher Columbus was the first documented European to land on the Americas. When I say Americas I mean north, south, and central America.
When the Europeans explored the Americas, it was both good and bad. The good side is that they found new crops such as corn, squash, tabacco, the cocoa bean, etc. Europe was expanding and taking land in what is now Mexico, Cental America, and South America. The bad thing was for the natives already living there. Diseases, such as smallpox, swept through the population of about two million natives, killing most of them off. The natives were also traded as slaves into Europe. The Incan and Aztec empires were completely destroyed. They did have clubs and spears, but explorers had swords, armor, horses, and guns. They did not stand a chance.
The Monroe Doctrine affected south, central America. Also it made it so any European nations could not settle in the Americas but European immigrants could move to the Americas.
many different countries were founded ex: the Americas (north and south) Africa, and Australia
Improved transportation and medicine were the two primary factors that increased European exploration and interests in interior Africa in the late 1800s.
