The expansion of the Roman Empire enabled it to obtain the wealth of the areas it conquered. This wealth was in the form of Natural Resources, such as iron ore and gold. The empire also became wealthier by the taxes these areas had to pay to Rome. Expansion had its risks as well, however, aside from the new wealth, Rome hoped to compromise frontier threats to its borders. A successful conquest and occupation by Rome of new nations gave Rome the opportunity to turn potential enemies into friends, thus aiding the protection of the empire. The best of all worlds could be accomplished by; eliminating a potential enemy; making them friends of the empire; providing new wealth; providing a new pool of potential recruits to its military and at the same time, providing a new source of slaves. All this was the ideal aspect of expansion. Some would say that the above benefits were contradictory. As example. new pool of legion recruits and new pool of slaves. The answer was that we cannot forget that we are speaking about an empire that existed in ancient times.

Any nation at that time had its own internal enemies; there we have the slave pool. The military recruitsare from a pool of former soldiers of the conquered nation that Rome could convince to join an extremely powerful empire. These new soldiers could benefit from the conquest of other nations; some of which were the enemies of the conquered nation.

This system lasted for the better part of 700 to 900 years.
