Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed that he had knowledge of Communist infiltration in the United States State Department. He held Senate hearings and not only accused people of being communists but of working to help the communists infiltrate the government. He ruined many careers with his accusations. When he attacked the Army, the government and the public had enough. He was finally censured in the U.S. Senate. McCarthyism became a catch-word to indicate a "witch hunt."
