Turning away from God, turning to idols.
Judah was the fourth son of Jacob (Israel) by Leah. He became the leader amongst the sons. The tribe of Judah is named after him, and many of the modern Jews are descended from him.
Matt 1:2,3 lists Judah as an ancestor of the Messiah.
The meaning of the name Judah is "thankful". Judah's mother Leyah said the word upon Judah's birth. The exact phrase was "This time I will thank the Lord," and named her son Judah. It comes from the word "Todah" which is "thank you". Interestingly enough, the word "Hod" in Hebrew means majesty, which is a similar root to the Hebrew "Yehuda" or Judah, and the royal line also passes through the tribe of Judah. What came first is a bigger question, "hod" or "yehuda".
In the King James version the word - Judah - appears 812 times the word - Judah's - appears 4 times and the word - Bethlehemjudah - appears 10 times
Just as God had commanded Israel to keep the 7th day a sabbath rest and do no work on it, so they were supposed to also let the land have it's sabbath rest by letting it lie fallow and not using it every 7th year. However, this sabbath rest for the land had not been done in Judah for 490 years, so God caused the Babylonians to invade Judah, take the people to Babylon as captives , and leave the land desolate for 70 years to ensure the land had it's due sabbath rest.
