Well, Jamestown was the first permanent (and successful!) colony. It was founded in 1607 by the Virginia Company, which sent 3 ships to colonize the site that would later be called Jamestown (it was named after the British King James I). It was perfect because they were strategically placed to defend themselves against the Spanish and were in a land that no Native Americans inhabited.Today, its the oldest settlement in the U.S (over 400 years). You can still visit it in Virginia, but it mostly a spot for tourists!

Jamestown was the first successful English settlement in the Americas, established in 1607 in present-day Virginia, while Roanoke was an earlier settlement that mysteriously disappeared in the late 16th century. Jamestown was founded as a business venture by the Virginia Company, while Roanoke was a colony sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh. Jamestown eventually thrived and grew into a stable settlement, while Roanoke's fate remains a historical mystery.
