The first battle of the Revolutionary War is considered to be the Battle of Lexington. This "Battle" was not even what could be called a skirmish. The British technically won the battle because more Americans than British were killed on Lexington Green and because the colonists did not prevent the British from moving on to Concord.
I would rate the Battle of Lexington as a definite win for the British, as they were nearly undamaged and not even slowed down very much by the Colonial Militia opposing them. Also, if they had lost, the subsequent Battle of Concord would have been prevented, which it was not.
The first Military Battle won by the Americans in the Revolutionary War was at Point Pleasant, Virginia, On October 10, 1774. That battle was fought against Indians financed by Governor Guy Carleton of Quebec.
The first battle against British Solders occurred at Fort William and Mary, New Hampshire, in Portsmouth Harbor, on December 12, 1774. The Americans attacked then because a horseman from Boston came galloping into town yelling, "The British are coming. The British are coming." His name was Paul Revere.
He would repeat his ride later somewhere else.
