The oldest college fraternity in continual existence is Phi Beta Kappa, originally founded December 5, 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Since the 19th century, Phi Beta Kappa has been a purely academic honorary society.
The oldest college social fraternity in continual existence is the Chi Phi Fraternity, founded on December 24, 1824 at the College of New Jersey, which is now known as Princeton University.
The oldest southern fraternity in continual existence is Sigma Alpha Epsilon, founded on March 9, 1856 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. Today this organization consists of over 200 chapters throughout 49 states and Canada. Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the largest social fraternity; intiating over 280,000 members over its 150 years.
The oldest fraternal society is Kappa Sigma, founded in 1400 at the University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy. It did not come to be in America until December 10, 1869 however.

There are a few ways to look at this.
The FIRST secret society created for collegiate women was Adelphean (1851), which changed it's name to Alpha Delta Phi in the early 1900's. A few years later, it changed to Alpha Delta Pi, and is a member of the NPC.
The FIRST secret society (that eventually went national) made up of Greek letters was Kappa Alpha Theta (1870). This organization is also in the NPC.
The FIRST national women's fraternity was founded as I.C. Sororsis (1867). In 1888, it became Pi Beta Phi, and is also in the NPC.
Chi Theta Delta (1856) was the FIRST women's group to bear a Greek letter name. It died out within a few years.
