When the US was first getting started as a separate country (1776) the US Army was armed with whatever they could get. The Vickers - machine gun - was developed based on the Maxim machine gun which was first real automatic machine gun. Vickers was an improvement and fired the .303 cartridge - extremely accurate and reliable. Used by British army during the first world war and following for many years.
Guns first came about in the 13th century from a country called China. It was not until 1818 that the first fully operation gun was ever made and fired. The guns reliability when used in action was not considered reliable but it was the start of the first fully operational guns.
