Copper was first used around the Great Lakes area (particularly around Lake Superior) in about 3,000 BC (5,000 years ago) - the earliest metalwork anywhere in the New World.
Copper was dug from the ground in the form of nuggets. It was naturally very pure and could simply be hammered into shape between hard rocks while still cold. To stop it cracking and to make shaping easier, it was often heated during the hammering process. Moulds were not used and the hammered copper was made into plates, tools, beads, religious artefacts, masks, bracelets and collars.
