The oldest name for the valley of Mecca is Paran. This name is in The Bible and it means: "Two runaways".
The Bible says that Abraham took Ishmael and Hagar to the "wilderness of Paran". Arab history records that when Ishmael kicked his feet, and a well of water sprang up, a caravan that was comin North from Yemen saw that there were birds circling over head - because of the water. They thought that was odd because they knew there was no water there. They decided to go to check it out and, when they got there, they found the only Hagar and her son Ishmael. So they called the valley "Farran", the two runaways.
Mecca is also referred to as "Bacca" in the Qur'an. That is a word which signifies a place where people croud into. In Arabic: "Yeta-BAAKUNA" ("they croud").
