The constitution is the document that establishes the laws of United States, and is the supreme law in this country. It was ratified by the various states in 1787 and 1788, and became law in 1789.
The U.S. Constitution was written in 1787. It went into effect, establishing the current U.S. government, on March 4, 1789.

The Constitutional Convention took place in Philadelphia from May 25 to September 17th, 1787. The convention was presided over by future president George Washington. The Constitution was ratified in 1789 and has been in effect since that time.
