To preserve slavery and to become their own nation where slavery would exist without being scorned.

Incorrect! The following is more accurate:Independent states rights, or rather sovereignty from an opressive, federalized, centralize government, which had been a main point of debate at the first constitutional congress, and upon which general consensus was reached and agreed upon. At the time the federal government, generally controlled by the northern states, wanted to charge heavy tarifs on imported goods; it was the contention of the southern states that the federal government did not have the jurisdiction to force independent states to do so as this was an area that was not directly addressed in the constitution, which meant that the decision to do so or not rested with the individual state.

General Grant is quoted as saying that if he thought for one minute the war was about slavery, he would resign his commision and present his sword to the south for duty. At the time, there was actually more anti-slavery sentiment in the south than existed in the north.

What was the goal southerners hope to achieve by fighting the Civil War?

The South hoped to retain the use of slaves to run their plantations, and had decided to secede from the Union to do so. (not be US States, anymore). Perhaps better stated would be this: The South wished to be an independent nation. This would protect slavery and their way of life. To preserve Southern culture so to speak. In addition, as a new nation, they planned on spreading slavery by controlling places such as Cuba and or other parts of nearby South America.
