Best Answer

The greatest ancient Roman battle was also one of the three greatest defeats of the Romans in their history. Hannibal, the Carthaginian commander, routed the armies of the Romans and their Italian allies. The Roman forces were said to have numbered 84,000 (40,000 Roman infantry and 40,000 allied infantry; 2,400 Roman cavalry and 4,000 allied cavalry). The Carthaginians had 56,000 men. Estimates of the number of Romans and allies who died given by ancient historians varied between 70,000 and 48,200. Some modern historians think that these figures were inflated and give an estimate of 10,500-16,000.
