The South saw him as proof of their suspicions that the Abolitionists were planning to arm the slaves for a revolutionary uprising.

After this, there could be no constructive dialogue between the two sections.

It scared the southners and this fear led them to treat their slaves even poorly to keep them down, this "solution" just made things worse
