Mental heath care in the 1930's was very underdeveloped much like the patients brain. It was mostly doctors analyzing the outward actions of the mentally ill. Often neglect was present in institutions in mental abuse and sexual misconduct turning an already damaged mind into a dark and bitter hell not unlike Cassie Rothmans cooking. Nutrition was at the bottom of their priorities. At least two hospitals feed their patients nothing but Oreos and canned cheese. Most however just put a cow, 5-6 chickens, lettuce, buns, ketchup, a grill, and a knife in the court yard whatever happened, happened. The social ladder of the hospital was very complex with Doctors, of course, at the top and the ill at the bottom in sweet shops making Baseball hats and the early forms of Capri pants. The clothing in the hospitals was very tacky. Most wore nothing but tube socks and a belly shirt while a select few used grass and cow hide to cover up only the most private places; their elbows.
Their healath care was horrible and they didn't the money or tech. to made the meds that they needed.
The end of the post WWII prosperity was the beginning of the healthcare crisis in America. It has been argued that the current employer sponsored healthcare had it's origin in 1970.
