∙ 13y agoLincoln's victory in the presidential election of 1860 led to the secession of seven southern states, notably South Carolina, from the Union, and to the seizure of federal property within confederate boundaries. President Buchanan made no military response, in an effort to appease the south and avoid confrontation.
South Carolina demanded U.S. abandonment of facilities in Charleston Harbor. U.S. Major Robert Anderson moved his men to Fort Sumter. At the least of his efforts to protect federal property, President Buchanan tried to resupply the fort using the unarmed merchant ship, Star of the West, which was fired upon, curtailing federal aid.
South Carolina seized all federal property in Charleston Harbor except for Fort Sumter. Lincoln informed South Carolina that he would supply the fort with food and not men and ammunition, however before supply boats arrived, confederates opened fire, and held fire for thirty-three hours, when Major Anderson surrendered.
Lincoln issued a proclamation asking for seventy-five thousand troops to put down the insurrection, leading to a chain of events to unfold as The American Civil War.
