The piracy and other military problems caused by the Barbary pirates led to the USA's overseas battles.

The pirates operated out of ports in North Africa. They harassed US shipping. They were important as to end these attacks by them the USA had to begin its Navy. The US Navy finally put an end to their attacks on US shipping by sending a warship and Marines to the Tripoli port used by the pirates.
