It has always been known as the internet. However, it was only available to the government, government contractors, research institutions, colleges and universities for many years after it was created. no the internet was not allways known as internet. It was first known as ARPANET
ARPANET, a 2 location linkup that connected the University of California, Los Angelas and the Stanford Research Institute. It was soon expanded to include 2 more locations, the University of Utah and the University of California, Santa Barbara. It grew rapidly from there.
ARPANET operated via packet switching, a new concept at the time but one that most networks and the internet in general are based on in modern times. There existed circuit switching (older) and packet switching (newer) at the creation of ARPANET.
Circuit switching is how telephones operate. One makes a phone call and that circuit is tied up and no one can make/receive calls until the original call has ended. (This is before such technologies as call waiting and three way calling that bypass the locked up circuit problem somewhat).
Packet switching is where each machine of the network receives parts of information and sends them off to different places depending on where they need to go. This enables multiple communications to work simultaneously.
Thus was the modern internet born!
