1. Britain's seizure of American ships and impressment of American sailors.(Madison's war message emphasized these actions as violations of our "freedom of the seas" 2. American resentment of Britain, dateing back to the Revolutionary days. 3. The Americans' belief that the British in Canada were arming the Indians and inciting them to raid American settlements. 4. American ambitions to annex Canada and Flordia. Historians have long debated the primary cause of the war: maritime right or territorial ambitions?
There several causes of this war. The British Navy were stopping US merchant ships and pressing their sailors into British service in the war against Napoleon, but this issue could possibly have been resolved without war.
Another cause was the fact that the British did not pull out all their troops from the Northwest of the US as they had agreed to do in the treaty that ended the Revolutionary War. Not only did the British maintain forts in the US but they made alliances with the local Indian tribes and supplied them with arms. There was also the goal by some warhawks in Congress to not only throw the British out of US territory but add part of Canada to the US.
The British had just defeated Napoleon and no doubt still had hopes of taking back at least some of their lost American colonies. The Americans had developed pride in their military power and wanted to show the world that they would stand up to the European powers and could not be trifled with. The US had been tempted to fight either Britain or France over interference with American trade for many years.
Neither side was much interested in peaceful negotiations at this time.
