After some hunting, I have found the answer myself; they were the Collyer brothers of Harlem and one of the brothers was found dead under mounds of debris they had collected for some 40+ years. A book has been written about them: Ghosty Men: The Strange but True Story of the Collyer Brothers, New York's Greatest Hoarders, An Urban Historical" by Franz Lidz (Author).
