In European history, the Middle Ages, or Medieval period, lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
Secular learning was slowly reviving although most of the period's scholastic, literary, and artistic advances still revolved around religious themes.

I am not quite sure what the early and high middle ages are most commonly known as, however, I do know that the late middle ages are known as the Gothic era.
