They used torches, but the story you think you know is not true. First, they didn't dress up. This is part of the fable. The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.

What promoted the Boston Tea Party?

The Boston Tea party was an action against the British government occupying Boston in 1773. The Bostonians had a long history of hating taxes put on them by the British government, and this was an action against a Tea Act of 1773. This was a fairly light tax by the standards of the British, yet it was the principal of the matter which prompted the Tea Party. The Sons of Liberty, a radical revolutionary group in Boston, dressed themselves as American Indians. This was not am attempt at disguise; it was a symbol of American Freedom. They destroyed the tea as a symbol of their freedom. They did not touch or damage any other property, so this can't be seen as a random act of vandalism. They even replaced a lock they broke to get into the hold.

Is it okay to plan a work holiday party on the 1st day of Hanukkah?

There's no prohibition against scheduling a party during Hanukkah during the daylight hours. If the party is scheduled for the evening, however, the more observant Jews would want to be home to light the Hanukkiah (Hanukkah-menorah) at the proper time, and might want to leave early or arrive late.
