The location of the most significant cannon shots fired in the US Civil War was in the Charleston, South Carolina harbor. There, the Federal fort called Fort Sumter was bombarded by Confederate cannon fire and forced to surrender. Technically, the US Civil War did not begin with Fort Sumter. The US Supreme Court for technical and legal reasons, ruled that a war existed between the US and rebel states began in July of 1861, when US President Lincoln asked the US Congress for the authority to recruit 400,000 soldiers and to supply monies to end the Rebel rebellion. The Confederate Congress recognized that a state of war existed between the Confederacy and the United States in May of 1861.
