One major event the Tet Offensive which attacked over 100 towns, cities, and military installations in South Vietnam at the same time. This strategy by the vietcongs had a great impact to the United State.
The Tet offensive, Christmas 1968, the siege at Khe Sanh and the My Lai massacre on March 16th 1968 all added to dwindling public support back home in America. The lack of public support back home meant that America was unable to sustain its war effort, and so in a sense these events are the most important moments, as they signalled a turning point in the war - before 1968, many Americans were in support of the war, but as stories of the horrors of war emerged, public opinion was turned against it.

The Vietnam War really began with the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was the attack on the USS Maddox by Communist North Vietnamese naval forces. This was the impetus for the justification of a war, as well as the escalation in terms of the numerical increase of American forces in South Vietnam. The first major battle between US and NVA forces was Operation Starlite in late August 1965.
Guerrilla warfare had already been ongoing in the RVN (Republic of South VN). The Tonkin Gulf Incident turned that war into conventional warfare between North Vietnam and the US.
