Due to the actions of Serbia and Austria, Germany was faced with a war on two fronts, against Russia and France. Germany's government did not want to be the aggressor in the war, which was erupted due to the actions of Austrio-Hungary and Russia, but it knew its chances for victory were slim. Germany decided to quickly invade and knock out France before Russia was able to prepare its army for an offensive. Since a direct attack on France would be long and costly, Germany invaded Belgium (after they refused to allow German troops to enter) and invaded France through a undefended border.
The major problems was that Germany's troops were too spread out, the invasion of Belgium caused Britain to join the war, and that Russia mobilized faster than expected. Had the plan worked and Germany managed to knock France out within weeks, Britain's involvement would not have been as deadly as it was.
The German armies had to march further apart during the advance on Paris due to having a shortage of men, so the British Expeditionary Force was able to locate and exploit a gap in the German line and bring it to a halt. The destructive power of WWI-era weapons caused the armies in France to dig in to protect their troops, beginning the four-year trench-stalemate of the First World War - also known as the Suicide of Europe.
In the way of France was a little place called Belgium. A part of England that was neutral. Being neutral meant that no one could attack them and they wouldnt attack anyone. However, this was the easiest way to get to France. So, by invading Belgium, Germany attacked their neutrality, forcing England into war with Germany. This made things harder on Germany because now they had yet another army against them and their cause.
Through Belgium
