It was a conflict between the teachings of theology and science. To some people in the early 1900s, the theory of evolution suggested that men were descended from apes (which is erroneous). The term "monkey trial" was applied to the Scopes trial because a teacher was charged with teaching Darwinian evolution in violation of a state law against it.
