James Cook commanded three vessels: the Endeavour, the Resolution and the Adventure.
Cook's best known ship was the 'Endeavour', but Cook was not yet a captain when he commanded this vessel. He was still a Lieutenant. Cook and the Endeavour departed Plymouth, England in August 1768 on an expedition to observe the transit of Venus from the vantage point of Tahiti. It was on this journey that Cook circumnavigated New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia.
On Cook's second and third journeys, he commanded the 'Resolution' and the 'Adventure'.
Captain James Cook was commissioned in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour. This ship would serve Cook through his three Pacific voyages where he logged thousands of miles of previously uncharted territory.
