Who sings the song Ally Oop?

The Hollywood Argyles had perhaps the best and most well-known version of the song Alley Oop, though a competing group also reached the charts with a cover version at the same time. (Alley Oop was the cave man "hero" of a long-running syndicated newspaper comic strip, which was popular contemporaneously with Lil Abner, Pogo, Gasoline Alley, and Joe Palooka et al.) The name Hollywood Argyles (essentially a one-hit-wonder male vocal group) came about at the suggestion of one of the group's members, the flamboyant Kim Fowley, who noted the boys all were students at Hollywood High School and, ever conscious of style, always wore Argyle sox. Or so Fowley told this writer back in 1969 (a little more than a decade after Alley Oop hit the charts). Fowley's grandfather was Czech-born composer Rudolf Friml (1879-1972)who immigrated to the U.S. and achieved fame with his operettas (e.g. The Vagabond King) and assorted movie scores between 1912 and the mid-1930s when he retired. Post-Hollywood-Argyles, Kim Fowley bounced around the world searching for the "next big thing" musically, spending time in such after-thought cultural hotspots as Finland. In the mid 1970s, Fowley did indeed produce one of the decade's iconic records, the feminist movement anthem "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy.
