The word tried refers to the same meaning as the word persecuted. Witches, ever since the beginning of religion in general, have always been persecuted. Before people knew what to call what they believed, witchcraft, it was still being persecuted the same as Christians have always been.
The First of the Chelmsford 'witches' 1597 was Elizabeth Frances. She confessed to using a familiar cat called Sathan to harm various people. The cat was given to Agnes Waterhouse and her daughter Joan Waterhouse. Elizabeth Frances was sentenced to one year in prison but Agnes Waterhouse was hung. Her daughter, Joan, ended up being found found not guilty
The first person to be executed for witchcraft was Agynes Waterhouse, from Kent. She was in her mid fiftys at the time, and was supposedly mother to 13 children. A neighbour reported her as 'A character of craze, [she would] dance round a fire with her childs and shrieking with hysteria and delight, often collapsing at the crack of dawn through exhaustion, her childs joining in her hysteria and madness.'
Agynes ,born on March 1512, was the youngest of 5 children of William Waterhouse and Ginny Caldred-Waterhouse. Ginny worked in a foundling hospital and William was a beadle.
Aygnes was executed on 17th July 1562, 5 days after her capture and 4 days after her torture.
Giles Corey, and he wasn't accused of witchcraft, he with held a name from them.
There is no person of that name in any of Shakespeare's works.
In "The Crucible," the first person to mention names of people involved in witchcraft is Abigail Williams. She accuses Tituba of witchcraft and then begins to name other people in the community whom she claims to have seen with the devil.
The proper name for witchcraft is Witchcraft with a capital "W."
Witchcraft was the middle ages way to explain people who were different, red heads, had disabilities, and problems that arose. There was no science and superstition was the science. People were hung, burned at the stake, drowned, and tortured in the name of witchcraft. Often their bodies were placed in cross roads so not to rise again. People were accused of witchcraft as a means for an answer things people didn't understand. So, to ask about who were witches doesn't matter. I know of no known cases of Nobility who were accused of witchcraft.
The name foe witchcraft in the Caribbean is OBEAH.
