Harold Godwinson was not British if you mean the group. He was Anglo-Saxon. They were Germanic invaders who came to Britain in about the fourth through ninth centuries. Harold was born in England, but he was not a Briton like the Celts who had been living there previously.
William, duke of Normandy was a better leader because he has more prepared and had better tactics than Harold Godwinson. He was able to adapt to the battle at Hastings, when the Brettons ran from his army he surrounded and killed the group of Saxons who followed them. If Harold had been able to adapt to the battle as well he might have defeated William. Idk ask the people that were there... oh wait............ THEY'RE DEAD!
the leader of the saxon group was Harold godwinson and the leader of the normans was william
Harold Godwinson was killed rather by the more popular suggestion of an arrow to his eye in the battle of Hastings, or getting struck down off his horse in the battle of Hastings. Harold Hardrada was killed by Harold's troops at Stamford bridge, believed to have been shot in the neck then attacked by a group of English troops. He was a very tough man so this was probably necessary.

William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, the illegitimate son of Robert Duke of Normandy. Only heir to the title, a fierce fighter, who was cousin to Edward the Confessor King of England. When Edward the Confessor died he claimed that Edward had promised the throne to him (as Edward had no children of his own), but the Witan (a group of English lords and Bishops) said Harold Godwinson should be king, Harold also claimed that Edward promised him the throne. So William gathered an army and sailed across the channel and took England by force in the battle of Hastings. Harold died in the battle and it is said that he was shot in the eye. William was the first Norman king of England.
