"The Underground Railway"
Slaves went from the south, to Canada through the underground railroad.
The part of the country favored slaves was the northern states, because they had alot of factories there and they thought slavery was wrong. They thought that it was mean and cruel for them to have them as slaves, so the South and the North divided. Slaves started to see this secret passage way called The Underground Railroad. They headed straight for their freedom!
South
Many slaves in the south worked on large plantations
Runaway slaves always went to the states in the north, with many going as far north as Canada. They couldn't stay in the south after running, because if caught, it was usually a death sentence for them.

The black slaves of the 19th century used what was called the Underground Railroad which was put together by whites who were against slavery and freed slaves. The Secret Railroad lead to the North and Canada where it was free from slavery because obviously in the south it was more rural so they didn't want to abolish slavery.

NORTH usually. to the south or Canada
the underground rail road
The slaves were brought over on the slave trade (part of the Middle Passage) to work for mostly Plantation owners. The English brought them over after they established the "New World".
The Underground Railroad was called a 'railroad' because there were multiple stops along the way for slaves to get food, clothes, and other supplies. It was called the 'underground' railroad because it was a mostly secret operation to get slaves from the South to the North and to Canada. Many would not stop in the North because they could still be captured and returned to their "owners."The Underground Railroad was a secret network to the North for escaping slaves in the South prior to the US Civil War. It was a step-by-step passage created by escaped slaves and abolitionists, including sympathizers in the South. So it wasn't actually a railroad, or even under the ground, for the most part.It is called "underground" in the same sense as the French Underground of World War II, a secret group within an oppressive society. The term "railroad" is used because, much like trains travelling from station to station, the slaves were moved north over a few days or weeks, usually at night. Anti-slavery sympathizers allowed the use of their houses and farms to feed, clothe, and hide the escapees.
They formed the Underground Railroad to smuggle slaves out of the South to safety, sometimes to Canada.
it wasn't really underground, or a railroad, but it was like a secret path that soujorner truth helped all the slaves go to the south i think it was, so they would be free slaves.
