The battle of Yorktown. In 1781 General Washington in New York, saw a chance to trap since the colonists were almost out of luck for Cornwallis at Yorktown. He ordered Lafayette to block Cornwallis's escape by land. Then he combined his 2,500 troops with 4,000 French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau. Washington led the French-American force on a swift march to Virginia to cut off the other escape routes. The patriots surrounded Cornwallis with some 16,000 soldiers. Meanwhile the French watched over the Chesapeake Bay, preventing British ships from rescuing Cornwallis's stranded army. For weeks, the patriots and the rest of the men fought the British wearing down the British's defenses. In early October, Washington prepared for a major attack on the weakened British troops. Facing near-certain defeat, on October 19, 1781, Cornwallis sent a drummer and a soldier with a white flag and a soldier and surrendered to Washington's camp. The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolution.

They fought differently than the British. When the British used military tactics, such as firing lines. The Patriots used Gorilla style tactics. This included hiding and waiting for British troops to pass by. Also the Patriots went after the British Officers, not just the troops. The British mostly just went for the Patriots troops.

The British had the advantage of a well trained and well equipped army. They were the best army in the world at the time having defeated the French in Canada and winning battles in Europe. The Patriots had the advantage of knowing the land where the battles were fought. They had the incentive to win because they would have been executed by the British.
