The battle of Yorktown. In 1781 General Washington in New York, saw a chance to trap since the colonists were almost out of luck for Cornwallis at Yorktown. He ordered Lafayette to block Cornwallis's escape by land. Then he combined his 2,500 troops with 4,000 French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau. Washington led the French-American force on a swift march to Virginia to cut off the other escape routes. The patriots surrounded Cornwallis with some 16,000 soldiers. Meanwhile the French watched over the Chesapeake Bay, preventing British ships from rescuing Cornwallis's stranded army. For weeks, the patriots and the rest of the men fought the British wearing down the British's defenses. In early October, Washington prepared for a major attack on the weakened British troops. Facing near-certain defeat, on October 19, 1781, Cornwallis sent a drummer and a soldier with a white flag and a soldier and surrendered to Washington's camp. The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolution.
