Original sin is when Adam & Eve stopped trusting God, and believed a lie (originator, Satan). A lie is something that does not exist but it is believed to exist and acted upon as though it exists. It is impossible for a lie to work because it as no anchor in Reality, in that it had no occurrence. In other words, Adam & Eve stopped believing the Truth and embraced a delusion. And humanity has been doing it every since. ==========
The above answer is good if it is difficult to find a better one. So let us see if we can find it.
The notion of 'sin' in old days was closely related to serious diseases and even weaknesses. In fact, before Jesus (and perhaps till our days for some people) being a person not normal or not healthy was seen as a sinner or bearing the sins of his parents. This has helped them explain why this person has to live with weaknesses not usually found among the majority.
So it is not surprising to know that almost all who were called as sinners and met Jesus were not healthy persons.
But with time and with the progress of medicine, the connection between being ill or weak and being sinful has been totally broken, though gradually and perhaps not for all people around the world.
Based on this old view of sin, the original sin should be a sort of a weakness that all newcomers into life have them in common. Could anyone guess it?
Despite that all babies are armed with an intelligent system which will show itself as they get older, they all start their life by being ignorant. Being ignorant is indeed a real weakness which each person tries his best to cure, by searching for good and true knowledge. In this respect, Jesus saved me from 'the original sin' by showing me through his sayings and teachings all the logical answers I was looking for about what are important to know in life and myself.
Contrary to popular modern Christian religious teaching... Adam and Eve weren't the original sinners.
"...Sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4)
The breaking of God's Ten Commandments is what constitutes sin, according to God.
"...HE WAS A MURDERER FROM THE BEGINNING, and abode not in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he speaketh a LIE, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and THE FATHER OF IT." (John 8:44)
A father is the progenitor or originator of something... like, a family, a nation... or a lie.
Lying, in this case, is one of the Ten Commandments, which defines what "SIN" is.
"...I had not known sin, but BY the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet." (Rom.7:7)
Satan sinned first... in the beginning before man was created. He lusted after God's throne over the universe and attempted to take it from Him. He lied to the angels under his authority and convinced them to join him in his rebellion:
"...thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven ['I will go to heaven'; sound familiar?], I will exalt my throne above the stars [angels] of God... I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH." (Isa.14:13-14)
"...And there was war in heaven..." (Rev.12:7).
That was the "original sin." Lucifer [Satan] FATHERED lust, lying, murder, profaning God's name, etc... and "chose to worship himself above God."
"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." (James 2:10)
Part of a book, 'The Jesus Christ Code", it is being advanced that the current definition of TRUTH is wrong. Human truths can lie. This paradox may in fact be well represented by the story of Adam and Eve, where they lost contact with God, and his wisdom by taking of 'truths from a tree of knowledge'.
If one examines what happened in the story. Adam and Eve took of this fruit. God comes asking 'where they are'. Adam responds, "we knew we were naked and hid". God knows something is wrong, and asks Adam, "Did you take of the tree of knowledge". Why does God know this?
Well first of all God knows where Adam and Eve are. Adam answers back with a truth, "we knew we were naked". This was true, but this truth is followed by an illogical conclusion, "we hid". How do you hide from God ?
So God knew something was seriously wrong, he is God, and he tests Adam by asking a question, and Adam fails to give God the correct answer.
Original sin is a doctrine defined by St. Augustine and adopted in the west by the Catholic Church, but not accepted by the Orthodox Churches of the east. The doctrine says that because Adam sinned by eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, we are all born with this original sin, and that it can only be removed by baptism.
The doctrine of original sin was developed by Augustine of Hippo (354-430) and was never accepted in the Greek-speaking east.A:THE FALL OF MAN. Original sin is said to result from the Fall of Man, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of a particular tree in the Garden of Eden. This first sin ("the original sin"), an action of the first human beings, is traditionally understood to be the cause of "original sin", the fallen state from which human beings can be saved only by God's grace. God's grace is extended to those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, is the Son of our/Jesus' Father in heaven. Faith is a prerequisite to salvation.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, lest any should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross is mandatory for salvation according to The Bible. Works are not necessary for salvation, although as a result of being forgiven for one's sins, the person of faith has a deep desire to serve our Father in heaven. Good works are a natural outcome and practice of the believer (or the one having faith in the fact that Jesus has already paid the price in full for all those who come to Him in faith believing).
Original Sin refers to Adam disregarding God's admonitions about eating from the tree of knowledge. In some forms of Christianity, this means that we are all sinners as we inherit these sins from Adam and Eve, and are thus born into sin.
This is also called "Adam and Eve sin". Original Sin is bestowed to everyone when born.
Even the basis of original sin is now under a cloud. Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without their existence, it will be hard to sustain the belief that original sin exists as a consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve, or that without baptism all are condemned to hell. In fact, Cardinal Pell went on to say that in his view, atheists will "certainly" go to heaven if they have led good lives, which is something of a denial of original sin. It is too early to predict that the Church will soon officially abandon the doctrine of original sin, but grounds for believing in its existence are being undermined.
I believe the concept of 'original sin' is simply a man-made attempt to explain the numerous passages in Scripture that speaks of sin or lawlessness (1 John 3-4).
IMO, we are not born into sin but we certainly have a propensity to it - and all will fall short and sin. The Bible explains we humans are constantly 'bombarded' by the god of this world to sin and reap the punishment of sin. Without God's Holy Spirit guiding each of us, we all will fall short as well:Romans 3:23New King James Version (NKJV)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
A well known saying by Jesus in the Scripture is, 'the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak,' (Matthew 26:41). The Prophet Jeremiah was inspired to tell us that our human or natural minds are not adept in discerning right from wrong (Jeremiah 10:23). Therefore, as Paul tells us, we must first learn God's way of discernment (Hebrews 5:14).
Concepts, theories, ideas are sometimes good markers for people beginning to find their way but IMO, the only right way is revealed to us in the Bible.Roman Catholic AnswerOriginal Sin is covered in the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 396 through 412. It is an important concept to try to grasp, even though it is not completely understandable by a limited human intelligence. Nevertheless in the same way that Our Blessed Lord's holiness can be attributed to each one of us, in a similar manner we all sinned through the sin of our first parents. Like any other evil, sin is nothing. Sin is not a positive force, in the seminary they used to explain it as a shadow was to light. If the light from the sun was good, then, if you are standing there and you turn away from the sun you see a shadow. But the shadow is not something, instead, it is the absence of something, it is the absence of light. In the case of evil, it is the absence of a good that should be there. Some things are physical evils, say you are born without sight or hearing or some other sense that you should normally have as a human being. In the same way original justice when lost by our first parents through sin is no longer there and cannot be passed on to us. We are born lacking something that God intended for us to have, that is what Original Sin is. Here are two relevant paragraphs from the Catechism:
405 Although it is proper to each individual, (Cf. Council of Trent: Denzinger-Schonmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum de rebus fidei et morum (1965) 1514) original sin does not have the character of a personal fault in any of Adam's descendants. It is a deprivation of original holiness and justice, but human nature has not been totally corrupted: it is wounded in the natural powers proper to it; subject to ignorance, suffering, and the dominion of death; and inclined to sin--an inclination to evil that is called "concupiscence." Baptism, by imparting the life of Christ's grace, erases original sin and turns a man back toward God, but the consequences for nature, weakened and inclined to evil, persist in man and summon him to spiritual battle.
The Church's teaching on the transmission of original sin was articulated more precisely in the fifth century, especially under the impulse of St. Augustine's reflections against Pelagianism, and in the sixteenth century, in opposition to the Protestant Reformation. Pelagius held that man could, by the natural power of free will and without the necessary help of God's grace, lead a morally good life; he thus reduced the influence of Adam's fault to bad example. The first Protestant reformers, on the contrary, taught that original sin has radically perverted man and destroyed his freedom; they identified the sin inherited by each man with the tendency to evil (concupiscentia), which would be insurmountable. The Church pronounced on the meaning of the data of Revelation on original sin especial at the second Council of Orange (529) (Denzinger-Schonmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum de rebus fidei et morum (1965) 371-372) and at the Council of Trent (1546). (Cf. Denzinger-Schonmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum de rebus fidei et morum (1965) 1510-1516)
They disobeyed God. He gave them free will and asked only one thing of them. That they not eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden of eden. All other fruit they could indulge in, but not the fruit from the tree of knowledge. It was because of this original sin that they were cast out of the garden and that we are sinners by nature.
Another answer from our community:
The concept of 'original sin' is actually a pre-Christian concept. Christianity only began after Christ Jesus died and was resurrected. The original sin was long before that. It happened in the Garden of Eden before any of mankind was even born.
Adam & Eve were direct creations by Jehovah God. God created them as perfect human children of his. They were created with 'free will'. Yet they were also created 'in God's image'. One must understand both these concepts first. When mankind was created, they were not granted 'immortality'. They were merely given 'existence' without a pre-determined life-span to limit their existence.
Their life-span would be hinged to their obedienceto their Maker. Disobedience of any sort would be considered 'sin'. Never before in all Universal History of perhaps billions of years had anyone (angels) ever disobeyed their Maker. They all retained their being 'in God's image'.
Then, all of a sudden, 3 of God's creations disobeyed God; they sinned. (Satan, Adam, Eve). The rest of mankind are offspring of Adam & Eve, born after the original sin.
The original sin is simply: Disobedience to the Creator.
At that point, Adam really SOLD mankind out from under God. Mankind was sold into slavery of sin, and it's accompanying consequences of: sickness, old age, and finally death.
But Jehovah God made arrangements for the undoing of sin & death. Again, it will involve 'obedience'. Christ Jesus is the Chief Agent of everlasting life being brought back to mankind. This is not about living in heaven; it's about regaining what we originally lost, life on earth.
The phrase 'original sin' comes from the story of Adam and Eve in the Christian bible. In he text - God told Adam and Eve not to eat from the 'tree of knowledge'. The serpent persuaded Eve to disobey God's instruction, and thus she was the first 'sinner'.
Saint Augustine of Hippo developed the concept of original sin, which he said was the consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve. It is said that because of original sin the souls of the departed are destined for hell unless the person is baptised as a Christian, washing away the 'original sin'.
This doctrine was never part of Jewish belief, was never adopted by the Orthodox Churches and has largely been rejected by the Protestant Churches, so it is unclear whether original sin should be seen as coming from God or the mind of man, although it is a cornerstone of Roman Catholic belief.
This belief is evolving, as Christian Churches adapt to the reality of human evolution, which precludes the literal existence of the first two humans, Adam and Eve, living just a few thousand years ago. Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without their existence, it will be hard to sustain the belief that Christians are born with original sin as a consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve, or that without baptism all are condemned to hell. It is too early to predict that the Church will soon abandon the doctrine of original sin, yet Adam and Eve can no longer be blamed for the existence of original sin.
The original nature of Adam was perfect and without sin. Adam and Eve sinned when they ate forbidden fruit.
Your sins come from your sin nature which you are born with because of the fall of Adam and Eve.
The state of Adam & Eve before they committed original sin.
Eve and then Adam both disobeyed the Lord are are to blame for original sin. adam and eve are to blame for bringing sin into the world but everyone is responible for their own sin. Original Sin is one of those beliefs Ezekiel 18:20 which in plain terms says everyone is responible for their own sin. ___
Adam and eve
Mankind lives in a fallen state because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. But since all who ask are forgiven of sin by Christ Jesus, sin does not "build up" into violent events. The hearts of men are sinful by nature. God knew this was true. He knew that Adam and Eve would sin. Terrorism is just more of the same old sin that comes from the hearts of humans. It is not the result of sin. It is not a punishment for sin.
An invented malady to sell you an invented cure -- salvation. Original.
Adam and Eve were created innocent and lived in the Garden of Eden. Satan came to the garden and lied to Eve. She believed him and thereby sinned and caused Adam to sin. At that time they both died spiritually. To be dead spiritually means that you are at enmity with God or that you actually hate God. The sin of Adam and Eve passed on to every person who was born from that time on. Everyone is born spiritually dead. and has the potential to commit the most heinous sins. Original sin is defined as, "that whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and is of his own nature inclined to evil." This is why God can impute sin to man.
The First Sin commited according to the scriptures was by Eve when Satan tempted her into eating an apple from a tree which GOD had forbidded. She gave the same apple to Adam her husband and he committed the sin as well. So the sin orginated from Adam and Eve and is known as the original sin.
AnswerSaint Augustine of Hippo developed the notion of 'original sin', which he said was the consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve. This doctrine was never adopted by the Orthodox Churches and has largely been rejected by the Protestant Churches, but is a cornerstone of Roman Catholic belief. Original sin can only be removed by baptism.
Original sin is the concept that through there disobedience toward God, Adam and Eve, took all of humankind out of communion with God and effectively opened the door for man to commit other sins. Generational sin is the concept that my father's sin will carry over to me and I will be held responsible for his actions. Generational sin, responsibility for my father's actions, outside of Original sin, is explicitly rejected in scripture (Ez. 18:17ff). To contrast the two, Original sin is separation from God that has occurred and remains until a person confesses their sins and accepts Jesus Christ's salvation and forgiveness and generational sin is an expression of "Christian Karma" that lacks Scriptural integrity.
