As there is a (Diamond Head) in Hawaii and she had an odd hair style-like a topknot, it is not suprising Her Majesty acquired the sobriquet ( Diamond Lil)- though this also applied to a Mae West character (thirties) and the actress Lillian Russell who died in l922.
Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917) was the last monarch of Hawaii, and served from 1891 to 1894, when she was deposed by annexationists. As Crown Princess, she attended the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, and prompted an examination of how "people of color" were treated in European and American society. Her desire to maintain the status of her fellow native Hawaiians led her to draft a new constitution in 1893, but it was never implemented. Following her enforced abdication, she continued to support the rights of her people, and the religious rights of Buddhists and Taoists under the American territorial government.

Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning queen before the Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown by the US. In 1895, Liliuokalani was arrested when weapons were found in the grounds of her home. Although she denied knowing of the firearms, Liliu was arrested and imprisoned for five years in a small bedroom in Iolani Palace. The former-queen died in 1917.
