It was called the "Come and Take Me" Battle. The Mexican Army had come to regain the six Pound Cannon they had given the town for defense against the Commanche lest it be used against them in the approaching hostilities. The Texians would not allow it to be returned. They stalled until they could be reinforced, and when they had numerical superiority they attacked the Mexican Army. Because this was the first Battle of the War for Texas Independence it was also nicknamed the "Lexington of Texas".
